To boldly go... [20 May 2009|08:42pm]
[ mood | sleepy ]

…where no man has gone before.

Trek movie-verse had been silent for seven years; regrettably muted by the lacklustre performance of film ten. Nemesis offered an intriguing duality of the nature versus nature debate in the body of Shinzon, Picard’s clone and a tool in a Romulan conspiracy, a potential ultimately dissolved by the film’s indecisive plot. Many fans found it difficult to hate, but cash spoke volumes for the studio. Reportedly, Nemesis pulled in the lowest domestic gross for the franchise and never reached the number one slot at the box office. Coupled with the disappointing ratings of ‘Star Trek: Enterprise’ series, no studio seemed to want to know.

Happily, re-boots are fashionable and Star Trek, after seemingly an eternity, finally gets treated to a shiny new film. We join the youthful ‘future’ crew of the original series in two hours of self-discovery, time-bending space adventure and sights and sounds of a world that is all too familiar. Long after humanity has advanced beyond petty territorial and ideological disputes to unite in a common goal, threat emerges in the recognisable face of Nero, a vengeful, renegade Romulan, broken by his past and intent on obliterating the future of everyone else.

Hmm.. I feel like destroying a civilization today.
All is as should be.. or is it?
Beware, spoilery spoilers off starboard bow, captain!

Come with me, cupcake!! )
In conclusion, I’ll highly recommend this film for both Trekkies and the uninitiated alike. For long-term fans this film is sure to be the closest to a geek-gasm that one can get. Star Trek is both a new film sure to bring in a new generation of fans as well as a respectful nod to what has come before.

This is an important film, something that Trekkies have been looking forward to for a long while. Star Trek is so much more than film number eleven, it’s a fresh re-start of a dwindling, yet very much loved, franchise.

However new and fresh this ‘Trek B’ universe may be, I feel that the ice in the hearts of even the most critical fans will be quickly melted away at the sight of the soft blue and crimson glow of the Enterprise’s engines.

…and god, it was deeply satisfying seeing those pointy ears again.

Live long and prosper,
~Yel.

Sketchy and Who. [11 Apr 2009|11:10pm]
[ mood | contemplative ]

Greetings, peoples!

My bucket has trickled full of news and it’s a good time for an update!

Art

Here’s a little peek at my most recent work-in-progress. Following the completion of the Schoolgirl Attack Squad, it’s been quiet project-wise. I’ve had quite an upsetting and stressful time recently, so my attention has been elsewhere. Thankfully, it seems to have calmed down a little so I’ve sketched down some ideas for upcoming projects. Still, I can’t begin anything big seeing as we’re planning a trip overseas to visit sick relatives. This state of limbo is quite irritating… but London Expo is at the end of May and I’m hopeful in attracting someone’s attention with my new portfolio!

I’m a Lord of Time…and slash. )
That’s it for now. We’re still waiting for news from Latvia but current plans are to leave and visit for a week at the end of April. More on that later.

Peace,
~Yel.

Watching men [20 Mar 2009|04:37am]
[ mood | contemplative ]
[ music | Immediate Music - 'Imperativa' ]

A confession; I’m a virgin.. a Watchmen virgin. When the teaser trailer tantalized us all those months ago, accompanied by the dulcet wail of ‘The Beginning is the end is the Beginning’ by the Smashing Pumpkins, I found myself quite interested. Knowing that the film was built upon a most excellent graphic novel, I nevertheless opted to remain spoiler-free.

All I knew was, that this was a super-hero story unlike any other; filled with gritty political commentary and striking visuals. When a certificate eighteen was issued, I got really excited; a sure sign that the studio hadn’t triumphed in butchering the creators’ vision. There was unrest in the long-standing fan department, but when hasn’t there been reason for an uproar? Recall the great debacle of 2006, when the exact colour and shape of Superman’s package was ruminated over in great detail.

March came quickly and with it came promises of a unique, hard-hitting vision translated into a cinematic blockbuster.

Here’s what occurred…

They will look up and shout; 'Are there spoilers?' And I'll whisper; 'Yes.' )

In conclusion, fans who’ve read the original graphic novel may enjoy the film very much indeed. What content is skipped over by the film will be filled in by their memories. If, like me, you’ve not read the novel, I’d advise to erase the film from your memory…go get the comic and read it beginning to end.. and then watch the film again, but this time as it is supposed to be watched and enjoyed.

That said, the film still suffers slightly from a need to include as much plot as possible and the minute emotional content appears to be thinner than it is intended to be.

As a side note, my non-comic-fan father became rather philosophical after seeing the film. He noted, remembering Russia twenty years ago, how much the world had changed and that none of them could imagine this film coming out in Britain and Russia simultaneously. Hmm.

:3
Thoughts welcome,
~Yel.

PIKA PIKA!! [18 Mar 2009|03:18am]
[ mood | silly ]

Greetings, peoples!

The real reason why Ryuuk did what he did at the finale of Death Note.

Pardon my poor attempt at drawing Tatsuya Fujiwara's Light. He's so pretty.

I'm still gripped by how awesome Death Note was. By chance, I caught the last half of the second film on television, and by great fortune caught both installments in the following week. The unpredictable twists in the plot and the complex battle of wits between Light (the young student who takes law into his own hands) and L (the eccentric detective genius on his trail) are immensely impressive.

The real brilliance lies in our initial identification with Light, a law student who becomes disillusioned in the law system. This is where The Death Note finds him; a book controlling a Shinigami (death god) who kills anyone whose name is written in it. He goes on to wreak justice onto those who’ve escaped punishment. Vigilante justice to be approved and identified with, ala Dexter. Soon, however, Light succumbs to the dark book’s power and goes off the rails in a spectacular fashion. That’s why this epic story is so exceptional; it leads us along a path all the while making us question how we interact with the text.

Additionally, the characters have real depth and complexity that is implied in things unsaid, even in lies. It’s superbly clever… The moral of the story; give manga a chance.

Also, Light is officially my favourite sociopath. <3

Anyways, enough gushing.. back to work tomorrow,
~Yel.
P.S. Returned from seeing Watchmen. Thoughts and responses tomorrow. Expect spoilers!

Keane came to visit... [13 Mar 2009|01:59am]
[ mood | discontent ]

C (my stepmum) and I, post-American Idol today:

Yel *a bit discombobulated*: “Awh, I dreamt that Keane had come to visit me for whatever reason…”
C: “Really?”
Yel: “Mhm.. just the singer and the drummer.. and they just humiliated me, I don’t know why…”
C: “It’s because you weren't bedshaped.” *nods knowingly*
Yel *rolls in breathless laughter*

Omg, I love her! <3

~Yel.
P.S. "Humiliation" involved the drummer shoving gross coleslaw into my face and then laughing at me.. Weird. Not fun!...I want to go back to manipulating matter at a sub-atomic level and traveling in time again! *humph!*

Pushed into watching [11 Mar 2009|02:18am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

Pew, pew!

Today, we watched Push, a film that describes a gritty world filled with people gifted with special abilities. We meet Nick the Mover (telekinetic) and Cassie the Watcher (she can see scrambled images from the future), who are soon joined by Kira the Pusher (mind control). We follow our ragged heroes as they escape a shadowy government organization called Division and dodge local mafia gangs on their journey to seek out a suitcase that contains the way to shift the power scales in their favour! Pretty epic, huh?

I have a fetish for superpowers, so it sounded quite promising. Annoyingly, the movie had been pulled from many local cinemas, yet somehow we sniffed out a small screen with it still playing. I soon discovered why…

I am the Spoiler… )

In conclusion, this is a nice, casual movie to watch for free on tv, but be prepared to hurl abuse at the plodding and clumsy storyline and the vacant characters…if you’re in the mood for more than commitment-free eye candy.

Oh, and P.S. the effects-heavy graphic #1 never happens in the movie! They’re lying to you.

Laters,
~Yel.

Creepy Dreams [06 Mar 2009|01:20am]
[ mood | sick ]

This night added another frightening theme to my, mercifully short, Nightmarish Themes 101 list.

but they simply laughed... )

Do YOU have a recurring nightmare theme? What is it?

Oooooooooon the plus side, I’ve managed to finish yet another mediocre piece of fan-art. This time, it was a long-overdue Batman fanart for a good friend. :3

They were the two knights; of dark and of light )

It doesn’t seem to be a complete failure (the picture-book sky seems quite relaxing) but I still wish my figure-work didn’t suck quite so much. While there’s some spare time between official work, I might get onto some focused practice, methinks.

Also, my back hurts.

Peace,
~Yel.

Amphibious [12 Jan 2009|03:19am]
[ mood | accomplished ]

Greetings, peoples!

I had a particularly brilliant dream last night and decided to write it up. I don't do that nearly enough. Besides, the lack of response from my comic-people is really frustrating and I really yearn to engage in some creative output.

In any case, the action takes place in a bustling sea-side town. This time around, I inhabited the body of a young amphibian guy. Makes an interesting change from shape-shifters and blood-hungry trolls. He was about seven feet tall with light blue patterns on his skin. His hands and feet are webbed and long-fingered. Although he appeared humanoid, thankfully there was no resemblance to humans in the nether regions. Cause then it’d have been awkward and I wouldn't have posted it up here. He appeared to have a passing resemblance to the current Klaatu. Nothing much happened in the dream, but the emotions and the imagery seemed cool enough to share. Anyway, you be the judge.

Why I don't want to be a liaison anymore... )

RSPCA Pub Quiz [08 Sep 2008|11:31pm]

I was undecided about my expectations for the quiz; our team was a duet instead of the required quartet, so chances of success were slim. Apparently, there was going to be a Best Name contest, so C (Stepmum) and I tossed some ideas about.

Completely Cool ComicCon! [20 Jul 2008|07:59pm]
[ mood | ecstatic ]
[ music | 'Into the Ocean' - Blue October ]

Greetings!

Comic Con!

*bounces around like a crazy person* :3!! Well, despite venturing out into The Convention all by my lonesome, the weekend was an unparalleled success! *jabs fist into the sky triumphantly* I’d dare say, I managed to accomplish approximately 95% of my intended targets...and am bloody chuffed with that!

I schmoozed with lots and lots of people, both from the world of geekoidia as well as on the comics publisher/artist side. Had a chat with Casey Coller, a professional comic artist, and asked him about the process. Also, had an unexpected opportunity to show off my art to an Indy publishers named Orang Utan Comics, a young company with some cool achievements behind their belts already. They seemed somewhat impressed with some of my stuff, which was ubernice, but it seems that my “fuzzy” cross-hatching failure of an inking needs more work. Very fair, it’s an ongoing process and I’m feeling positive. I know who and where they are now and know where to go once I actually get GOOD. *hysterical giggle*

I’m doing it, people. I’m actually doing it!

But none of that matters.. really. Why? Well.. because…
